How to Choose an Off-Road Harness: Cam-Lock vs. Latch & Link
Every PRP harness keeps you securely in your seat. The differences come down to buckle style, belt width, padding and adjusters. Here's how to choose the right one for your machine and the way you ride. If you're still deciding whether a harness is worth it at all, start with why you should upgrade your harnesses.
Buckle style: cam-lock vs. latch and link
Cam-lock harnesses bring every belt into a central rotary buckle. A quick twist releases all of them at once, which makes getting out fast and easy. The PRP 5.3 Cam-Lock adds PRP's CleanLatch technology, with dust-resistant seals and rubber fittings that keep dirt and mud out of the buckle.
Latch and link harnesses use a simple lift-lever buckle on the lap belt. They're straightforward and familiar. The PRP 5.3 Harness is a popular latch-and-link choice, with sewn-in shoulder pads for comfort on long rides.
Belt width and points
- 5-point, 3-inch (the "5.3"): the most support and the most common choice for sport UTVs.
- 5-point, 2-inch (the "5.2"): a slimmer belt, offered in cam-lock and latch-and-link versions such as the PRP 5.2 Cam-Lock (SFI 16.1).
- 4-point, 2-inch (the "4.2"): a lighter option like the PRP 4.2 EZ-Click for easier-going riding.
Options worth knowing
- EZ adjusters: pull-up shoulder adjusters you can tighten quickly, even when the belts are dirty.
- Ratchet lap belts: let you snug the lap belt precisely. They're available on versions like the PRP 5.2 Cam-Lock with ratchet straps.
- Removable pads: needed if you run a HANS-style neck restraint.
- Clip-in tabs: the 5.3 Cam-Lock's bolt-in tabs can be swapped for clip-in harness tabs to make removal easier.
Certification
The PRP harnesses listed here carry SFI 16.1 certification. If you plan to enter an organized event, check that event's rules for its current harness requirements.
