Why Run a Rear Chase Light in the Desert?
In the desert, the biggest risk often comes from behind. Riders following you through a dust cloud, or after dark, may not see your machine until they're right on top of it. A rear chase light, or a rear tail light bar (RTL), makes your UTV easy to spot from a distance.
Why it matters
- Visibility in dust. Bright amber and red lights cut through dust far better than a small factory taillight.
- Clear signals. Brake lights and turn signals at the top of the car tell the riders behind what you're about to do.
- Night riding. A white reverse or work light makes it easier to back up, load and set up camp.
Choosing a setup
Vehicle-specific RTL kits are the simplest route. The Baja Designs Pro R RTL kit comes in three versions: the standard RTL, the RTL-W with a flashing amber, and the RTL-S with integrated turn signals. The RTL-S harness is ready to install out of the package. Baja Designs also offers RTL kits for the Can-Am Maverick R and RZR Pro XP and Turbo R.
Compact options like the 6-inch RTL-M Mini suit Jeeps, ATVs and machines with limited space. They also include white LEDs for cargo and scene lighting.
Chase light mounts let you place pod-style chase lights where they're easiest to see:
- The DRT rear fascia chase light kit for the 2022+ Pro R mounts lights at the farthest rear point of the car, clear of cargo and spare tires (lights sold separately).
- The StayFlush billet aluminum rear chase light mount is a rattle-free option for the Pro R.
- CageWrx makes a rear wing for the Baja Designs 30" RTL for the Pro XP, Pro R and Turbo R.
A note on local rules
Lighting rules vary by area and riding location. Some desert areas require specific rear lighting or flags. Check the rules where you ride.
